Let us take a step back and look to see
Not a look at the planets or stars
But the women and men that dwell on this earth
And listen to John and say there is no religion
Nothing to live or die for, nothing to steal or lie for
If there were no preachers, wouldn’t forgiveness
Be a good idea without anyone having to die for
If there were no preachers, wouldn’t giving
Be a good way to tend to the poor
If there were no ideas of how God should rule
Or people claiming the right to rule in His stead
Wouldn’t love be a good way to treat your neighbor
If God was not watching with a book of life
Wouldn’t helping one another be a good way
To live the life we are living in now, day to day

Wouldn’t peace be a better way to live together
Wouldn’t having enough be better than possessions
Stored while a bigger piece of humanity does without
Wouldn’t it be better to give than to receive
Wouldn’t the servant be the greatest among kings
Wouldn’t everyone being fed be the better
To the fattening of the few and buried treasures
There is a God, and He is one to live for
There is a Jesus, and He is one to give for
If there is a preacher, he should be the servant
If there be a king, a greater servant he should be
The shepherd should not be made fat on lamb
God created enough and placed it at our feet
But He left it up to us to bend down and pick it up
And to decide whom we make rich or poor

Rules of social living are like fences we keep mending
To keep some things in and some of us out
Rules of ownership and procedures keep some people rich
In their own minds and by the clothes they choose to wear
While demanding those less concerned about such things
Do the same, we give ourselves titles and committees to agree
That we should have certificates before we can decree
That someone is capable of doing what we ourselves cannot
And then decide on the worth of the service they will provide
Making sure it is enough to keep their greed alive
The sad thing is that the people claiming to be of Christ
Place these titles made by men upon their own heads
Claiming to know what a person that is a Child of God should do
With paper rules and certifiable proof that they have been taught
